| The
causes of herpes on your genitals is mainly down to having sex
with an infected partner. Even just close genital contact is
all it takes to spread the virus to another person. Herpes
is painful and once contracted will always appear in the same
area of the body as your first outbreak.
Genital
herpes can appear on the skin anywhere in the genital area as
nasty blisters/sores, which them burst making them painful.
Both men and women are equally at risk of developing genital
herpes. In rare causes adults and children can be infected indirectly,
such as through the use of an infected towel. Babies can also
be infected during delivery
(see
genital herpes during pregnancy).
Not
everybody infected with HSV will develop genital herpes. Some
will be infected with a strain that does not produce blisters
or sores, or they will remain asymptomatic (i.e. no blisters
will appear) even though the virus is present within the body.
If
you have sexual intercourse with someone just once with the
HSV virus, there is a 2 in 3 chance you have contracted the
virus. So if you have a partner you are sexually active with,
there is a strong possibility you have already contracted the
HSV virus from them. 80% of people who
have the HSV virus actually develop genital herpes.
Once
a person contracts the HSV virus a quiet period of months to
years can occur. Sometimes several years pass without any symptoms.
However even without showing any symptoms it still leaves a
healthy partner vulnerable to becoming infected during sexual
activity.
